Serving Together

It’s a Monday night. There’s a group of sophomore boys from a local Catholic high school, a well-dressed young man with a Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints badge prominently displayed, two international students from a local college, a couple of Lutherans (my son and myself) and some men, residents of the homeless shelter where we were serving the evening meal. To Feed or Flourish

The last couple of weeks were busy – with work deadlines and kids’ commitments colliding in big ways! Looking back, I’m fairly certain I failed absolutely everyone in my life at some point. Those moments when you realize you can’t make everyone happy are discouraging. My family has encountered these weeks before and we’ll do so again, but each time we make it through and I feel called to reflect on my own actions and inaction. Continue reading

Learning what Love looks like

My son is 9 years old, just started 3rd grade. Sometimes I step back and pause in disbelief… What happened to the last 9 years?! A big kid is before me where a chubby little toddler once stood! Time passes quickly and the way my son sees the world has changed. Continue reading

Reflections from the Other Side

A few weeks ago, a friend and I had a genius idea! (Well, it seemed so at the time…) We decided to take some cherished vacation time and spend the entire day kayaking a local river. We had completed a similar trip last fall, and planned to start where we left off and continue to end. (For you local, Eastern Nebraska folks, this was the Platte River from Schramm Park SRA onto the Missouri River, exiting at the boat ramp in Plattsmouth.) Continue reading
