When Logistics Get in the Way

The tagline for this blog is “Our Family’s Journey to Find God in the Everyday!’ Saturday held events which were not “everyday” and God was most definitely present!

The past week was a busy one; big deadlines at work (again), soccer, kindergarten round-up, church commitments, doctor appointments, meetings. We had joyful events on Saturday to look forward to. But as the week wore on and the opportunity for sufficient sleep evaporated, my husband and I allowed the logistics of the day get in the way of our excitement for these important events. Here we go… another new year!

The new year has arrived! Each year I become more amazed at how quickly time moves.

ferrisbueller3This weekend was my last chance to “live” before the overtime nightmare that is year-end accounting begins. Family was in town. We had plans for fun, games, a nice dinner out, time to celebrate a new year. Yet on Saturday morning, I sat in my dark living room buried under blankets watching Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. Is it time to celebrate Christmas yet?!

As we quickly approached Christmas, I heard the following question countless times:  “Are you ready for Christmas?” I asked this question myself a few times. I know what it implies – trust me…

Did you purchase and wrap the perfect gift for all of your friends and family? Is the house clean and the decorations immaculate? Have you planned the perfect menu? Did you fight the grocery store crowds to purchase 10 packages of cream cheese and every variety of booze your guests could desire?

(Those of you that know me in any way are thinking – “duh!”) Sometimes life doesn’t go as I’ve planned – yet it ends up being exactly what needed to happen. I’ve noticed a number of little unplanned events lately that have worked so very perfectly I couldn’t have planned them myself. Continue reading

How to be a parent: Chasing the perfect answer to an impossible question

I enjoy running.

Maybe I need to clarify. I enjoy running when the weather is pleasant and I can be outside on a beautiful sunny afternoon. It is SO hard for me to run in the winter. I don’t like to be outside in the dark; I’m not a big fan of the cold. I’ll go to the gym – though certainly not as often as I should. I find running on a track tedious. And it is far too easy to convince myself to slow the treadmill down and head home early. You can’t do that when you run outside. If you’ve ran 2 miles from home you have to turn around and run back! No quitting early!! Continue reading
